College swimming can be rewarding for so many reasons.   When you first arrive on your college campus as a freshman, your team and your coach will provide support and structure for you and usually speeds up your acclamation period to college life.  Your teammates will probably be your first friends in college.   You will share experiences both in the pool and out that will make lasting ties through your life.   This is important to consider when deciding on a school as a prospective student-athlete.  Your teammates will make a large difference in your college experience so choose wisely.Goal attainment is another great reason to swim in college.  Getting faster, qualifying for the conference or NCAA championships and leadership opportunities are all goals that college swimmers strive to achieve.

College swimming also keeps student-athletes focused academically and prepares the student-athlete for the challenges of life.  The time commitment required by college athletics compels the student-athlete to manage time effectively and handle responsibility under pressure.   By its very nature, college athletics teaches punctuality, commitment, team work, perseverance, and dedication.  These are all important attributes that employers and graduate schools are looking to bring to their organizations and will make a college athlete more desirable candidates.

When considering colleges, how do I find the right academic / athletic match for me?  Most serious swimmers can swim in college provided that they find the right fit.  Obviously not everyone will be able to swim at a powerhouse DI school, but most swimmers can find a match and swim in college.  There are many different types of colleges and college swimming programs so it is important to take a true assessment of yourself to find the right fit for you.   Although there are 3 NCAA divisions, schools and swimming programs can vary tremendously within each division.  For instance, there are many exclusive academic universities that have highly competitive swimming teams in all divisions.   To swim at one of these schools, you would need to make sure that you match both the academic and athletic qualifications required by the school.
